Cocktails, capers, and corgis in 1948 England!

After receiving a letter about a mysterious inheritance, Sugar Martin hops a plane from the West Coast of America to exciting post-war London. However, everything is not as it seems, and Sugar finds herself stuck in England for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, she’s also been offered a job. Unfortunately, that job means going undercover to solve a series of thefts at manor houses in Devon, England.

Determined to prove her worth, Sugar sets out to find the thief amongst the glittering houseguests, and instead stumbles across a murder victim. With the dubious help of a grumpy corgi and a handsome Englishman, she’s on the hunt for a cold-blooded killer.

From the author of the popular Lady Rample Mysteries comes the first book in the Sugar Martin Vintage Cozy Mysteries set in post-WW2 London.

A Death in Devon by Shea MacLeod brings Sugar Martin to 1948 Devon to collect her inheritance and a job.

Will Sugar catch the thief?

Sugar Martin, aka Euphegenia Martin, finds herself going to London to see what this mysterious great-great-aunt could have left her. She discovers more or less that her great-great aunt left a dog everything, and Sugar has to care for said animal. Sugar agrees to more than she bargained for, but maybe moving to Devon won’t be so bad after all. I like Sugar. I feel like she needed this move more than she thought at the beginning.

A Death in Devon CR

The Mystery

Her aunt’s solicitor tasked Sugar to spy on a client’s houseguests to suss out who is a thief amongst them. Only reading books about mysteries doesn’t help when tasked with the real thing. I think that Sugar did a great job of being a spy within this group, figuring out who the thief was, and solving a poor guy’s murder. I’m admitting that I figured out whodunit when she found evidence contradicting what another person told her. I didn’t get the other person involved until they revealed themselves.

Five Stars

I am giving A Death in Devon by Shea MacLeod five stars and recommending it to anyone who loves a good 1940s mystery novel. I am in love with Sugar Martin and her love interest. Ms. MacLeod has a great series starter on her hands, and I can’t wait to see what other types of mischief poor Sugar Martin gets herself and Teddy into.

About Shéa MacLeod

Shéa MacLeod

Shéa MacLeod is the author of urban fantasy, paranormal romances, contemporary romances, paranormal women’s fiction, and cozy mysteries. She has dreamed of writing novels since before she could hold a crayon. She totally blames her mother.

Her love affair with books, words and stories began at a very young age when her mom would load her and her brothers into the red Radio Flyer wagon and haul them down to the local library. For Shéa, the library was a magical place, each book opening up a new world. Her favorite poem as a child was ‘Jabberwocky’, and Her favorite authors were Agatha Christie and Edgar Allan Poe. Which probably explains a lot.

After six years living in London, England, a dearth of good donuts has driven her back to her hometown of Portland, Oregon.

Her first series, Sunwalker Saga, has hit bestseller lists multiple times, and her Lady Rample Mysteries set in 1930s London is a major hit with readers! She is currently working on the next book in the Sugar Martin Vintage Cozy Mysteries as well as the first book in her new paranormal women’s fiction series, Season of the Witch.
